Minutes of the RAPSU General Membership Meeting, November 8, 2007

President Marge Weiss reminded everyone about the upcoming Holiday Luncheon on December 6, at University Place.

About 65 members and friends were in attendance.

Margaret B. Neal, Ph.D., director of the Institute on Aging, Portland State University, gave a presentation on The World Health Organization’s Age-Friendly Cities Project in Portland, Oregon.

Portland
was the only city in the United States to participate in the study, along with 32 other cities throughout the world. Eight areas regarding age-friendly aspects of the city were considered. Over the next 30 years the PortlandVancouver metropolitan area will see dramatic growth in the proportion of the population that is 65 and older.

From the study it is clear that Portland clearly has many age-friendly features. At the same time there is room for improvement. Inequities especially exist in regard to access to affordable housing, services, and health care.

Multnomah County Aging and Disability Services Helpline (503-988-3646) is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week and provides callers access to a “real live person” for information about services for older adults.
